Cure with Confidence: Tools and Models for Resin Process Control
The performance of the final product depends heavily on the degree of cure - making it critical to ensure that the reaction goes to completion for the highest quality and reliability. Achieving this requires both a deep understanding of the resin’s curing behavior and precise control of process parameters. Tools such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dielectric analysis (DEA) and oscillatory rheometry provide powerful ways to characterize thermal transitions, cure progression and flow behavior. Each method delivers distinct insights. In this presentation, NETZSCH will discuss when to use DSC, DEA or oscillatory rheometry. These techniques also serve as the basis for kinetics analysis using Kinetics Neo software. Kinetics modeling allows simulation of resin behavior under any time or temperature conditions. This not only enables process optimization and consistent product performance but also helps reduce manufacturing variability and thus scrap rates by predicting and preventing potential processing issues. Tool Smarter, Repair Stronger: Kaneka’s Low-temp BMI and Advanced Resin Repair System
Kaneka Aerospace specializes in high-performance composite materials tailored for aerospace and industrial applications. Its portfolio of prepregs, resins and adhesives delivers properties that go beyond lightweight and strength — enabling customers to achieve greater value in manufacturing and sustainability. In this session, Kaneka Aerospace will unveil recent innovations in tooling and structural repair, two critical areas for the economics and longevity of composite structures. Kaneka Aerospace has developed a unique BMI prepreg designed to lower tooling costs while maintaining high performance. Unlike traditional BMI tools that require high-temperature master molds and costly fabrication processes, this prepreg cures first at 250 °F (121 °C) and then undergoes a free-standing post-cure at 400 °F (204 °C). The lower initial cure temperature allows the use of less expensive master molds, while testing demonstrates the carbon fiber reinforced BMI tools’ thermal and dimensional stability under extended use. To further support the composites market’s growth and sustainability goals, Kaneka offers a proprietary repair resin engineered for efficient structural repair. Its low viscosity and balanced mechanical properties ensure effective filling of damage such as delamination and matrix cracks. UV Curing for Composite Manufacturing
Ultraviolet energy (UV) curing, also known as energy curing, has been used by the composites industry for some time, but it is still not quite as well-known as some other curing chemistries. The extremely rapid cure speed leads to high throughput and productivity, while the breath of physical properties of the cured resins allow them to be used in a variety of applications. The possibility of making lower VOC/styrene free formulations with very long pot life and reduced waste are also benefits of UV technology. In this presentation, allnex will briefly review what UV curing entails and compare the advantages and challenges of energy curing with thermally curing technologies (for example, peroxide curing of UP resins). In addition to comparing the chemistry of these approaches, we will also look at which composite manufacturing methods best lend themselves to energy curing. We will show some examples of UV curing being used in today’s composites world and where it might go in the future. Composites, Materials & Structures (CMS) Conference
The annual Conference on Composites, Materials, and Structures is the preeminent export controlled and ITAR restricted forum in the United States to review and discuss advances in materials for extreme environments. The Conference started in the 1970s as a small, informal gathering for government and industry to share information on programs and state-of-the-art technology. Attendance has grown to nearly 500 people while preserving this same objective to share needs and trends in high-temperature and extreme environment materials, and the latest information on advanced materials and manufacturing processes. The five-day conference program includes two to three parallel sessions per day on topics including thermal protection materials, ceramic matrix composites, carbon-carbon materials, ballistic technologies, hypersonics, and gas turbine engines. Attendees are engineers, scientists, managers, and operational personnel from the turbine engine, aviation, missiles and space, and protective equipment communities. These communities include the Navy, Air Force, Army, MDA, NASA, DARPA, FAA, DOE, engine manufacturers, missile and aircraft manufacturers, commercial space companies, and material and component suppliers.

Regarding composite materials, the group provides and continuously develops long fiber-reinforced thermoplastic compounds and unidirectional fiber-reinforced thermoplastic tapes, based on carbon fiber and polypropylene under the brand name TAFNEX™. TAFNEX™ is produced as a unidirectional tape (UD Tape) but can also be provided in further finished products: Structural Sheet, Woven Sheet, Design Sheet, Sandwich Panel, and Tube.
