Carbon Rivers Inc. (Knoxville, Tenn., U.S.), an R&D engineering firm specializing in the field of composites recycling, ballistic protection and multipurpose coatings, announces the innovation and modification of a Mazda RX-8 electric vehicle (EV) in the upcoming 24 Hours of Lemons Endurance Race.

The 24 Hours of Lemons is a series of endurance races held on paved road race courses across the U.S. that showcase the capabilities of vehicles purchased and track-prepped for $500 or less. Carbon Rivers, known for its expertise in EV batteries, composites recycling and automotive coatings, has converted a Mazda RX-8 from a petrol-driven car into a fully electric-powered race car. This initiative aims to demonstrate the firm’s prowess in advanced technologies while competing against gas-powered vehicles.

The race provides a platform for Carbon Rivers to exhibit its next-generation pristine graphene automotive anti-abrasion and anti-corrosion coating. Additionally, the firm will demonstrate the use of upcycled glass fiber composite molding from end-of-life wind turbine blades that serves as the custom bumper. The EV is equipped with a Tesla P100D drive unit, and Tesla’s latest high-power density batteries, and the company’s Hot Swap technology boasts high efficiency and range, potentially surpassing traditional petrol endurance car pit times. In just a matter of a couple of minutes, the batteries can be hot-swapped to a fully charged set, ensuring uninterrupted performance throughout the race.

Should Carbon Rivers’ race car emerges victorious in its class, it will not only secure a world record but also be awarded the XPRIZE, which would mark the first time an EV triumphs over petrol vehicles in an endurance race.

The event will take place at NOLA Motorsports Park from March 23-24, 2024.
