RVmagnetics (Košice, Slovakia) and Testia (Toulouse, France), an Airbus company, have announced the launch of a joint project to integrate MicroWire-based sensors directly into composite pressurized tanks for aerospace applications. The effort, funded by the European Space Agency (ESA), is designated PRETA MICOMSS — Pressurized Tanks MicroWire Integrated Composite Mechanical Stress Sensor — and is scheduled to run for 14 months.
The project centers on embedding sensing capabilities within composite material structures, with the aim of enabling real-time monitoring of mechanical stress and structural integrity throughout the component life cycle. Such embedded sensing capabilities are described as increasingly relevant to next-generation space systems, where weight reduction, safety and predictive maintenance are cited as critical design considerations.
“We see embedded sensing as a key enabler for the next generation of aerospace structures,” says Pavol Lipovský, tech lead at RVmagnetics. “By integrating MicroWire technology directly into composite materials, we can provide continuous insight into materials in ways that were not previously possible.”
Lipovský is leading the project alongside a dedicated engineering team with backgrounds in advanced materials and sensing technologies.
RVmagnetics will share updates and insights as the PRETA MICOMSS project progresses.
