Non-Syntactic Foam Core is Certified for Underwater Technology Systems

Gurit (Wattwil, Switzerland and Bristol, R.I., U.S.) has achieved DNV certification for its Corecell S structural foam core, making it what the company contends is the first non-syntactic foam to obtain this approval for underwater technology applications. The certification covers DNV’s Class Programme DNV-CP-0084 for type approval of sandwich core materials, as well as DNV’s Rules for Classification governing materials and welding for underwater technology systems.

Corecell S is designed for harsh marine environments, offering high hydrostatic crush strength, minimal buoyancy loss and long-term reliability at depth. An ultra-fine cell structure gives the foam high water resistance along with chemical and thermal stability, making it suited to components such as subsea buoyancy or storage units, diving bells, ROVs and impact protection structures.

The material is compatible with epoxy, polyester and vinyl ester resin systems, and supports infusion, hand lamination and thermoforming processes, allowing it to integrate into a range of existing manufacturing workflows. Corecell S is available with plain, pinhole and vacuum-infusion cut finishing options, in sheet form or as pre-cut kits, and can be ordered across a range of densities to meet specific performance and design requirements.

Within Gurit’s Corecell portfolio, Corecell S complements Corecell M and Corecell I, together covering applications spanning marine structures to industrial and subsea systems. The DNV certification follows Gurit’s securing of a multiyear contract to supply Corecell structural foam core to the subsea industry, further establishing the company’s position in that market.
