Abrasive Technology (Lewis Center, Ohio, U.S.) has introduced P.B.S. Braze, a diamond bonding system engineered for machining composites and other nonmetallic materials. The system is intended for manufacturers working with graphite epoxy, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), graphite, fiberglass, friction material and other materials.
Rather than relying on conventional bonding methods, which the company says can leave diamonds vulnerable to pull-out and abrasive sections prone to stripping and peeling, P.B.S. Braze bonds diamonds directly onto the tool via brazing. This increases diamond exposure and is designed to reduce these failure points. The company states that the added exposure also contributes to cleaner cuts through fibrous materials, reducing uncut, frayed fibers that can affect part quality during composite machining.
Abrasive Technology’s system delivers faster cuts, cooler operation, minimal load and longer service life compared with conventional diamond bonding methods, which translates to cleaner edges, fewer tool changes and more consistent results.
P.B.S. Braze’s diamond crystals are designed for maximum exposure and fast stock removal, intended for tough-to-cut materials requiring deep cuts and aggressive material removal while minimizing uncut fibers. For manufacturers with tight tolerances or unconventional geometries, Abrasive Technology also offers custom-manufactured tooling in non-standard sizes and forms.
