University Research Center Bridges Composites Discovery and Manufacturing
CAMX 2026: The University of Delaware's Center for Composite Materials has worked with industry, government and academic partners since 1974 to move composite materials research toward manufacturing readiness.
Since 1974, the Center for Composite Materials (CCM) at the University of Delaware (Newark, Del., U.S.) has worked to advance the field of composite materials. Established as one of the first university-based centers dedicated to composites, CCM brings together faculty, students, industry and government partners across interdisciplinary research, education and technology transfer.
CCM’s work spans three connected areas. On the research side, faculty and research teams study materials synthesis, processing, mechanics, design, testing and simulation, addressing foundational scientific questions alongside technologies aimed at meeting the performance demands of specific industries. Through partnerships with industry, national laboratories and federal agencies — including through platforms such as SPARC — CCM works with collaborators to translate that research into solutions that are refined, tested and advanced toward manufacturing readiness rather than left in the lab. From there, CCM supports the transition of innovations into real-world applications, contributing to materials solutions used in aerospace, defense, energy, infrastructure, transportation and other sectors, with an emphasis on composites designed to perform in demanding environments where strength, lightweighting and durability matter.
Education is part of this structure. As part of the University of Delaware, CCM provides undergraduate and graduate students with hands-on research experience, engaging them directly with industry-relevant problems as part of their training in advanced manufacturing and materials.
With a global network of partners and more than five decades of activity, CCM continues to connect research, manufacturing and education within a single program spanning the path from materials discovery to deployment.
