University of Delaware calls for 2021 Medal of Excellence in Composite Materials nominations
Award recognizes individuals who have actively contributed to the field of composites through leadership, scholarly and education endeavors, inventions and/or economic enterprises. Deadline is July 25.

The University of Delaware’s (UD) Center for Composite Materials (CCM) is actively seeking nominations for the 2021 Medal of Excellence in Composite Materials by July 25, 2021.
The Medal of Excellence in Composite Materials, awarded since 1984, recognizes pioneers and innovators in composite materials who have made significant contributions to the composites field through leadership, scholarly and education endeavors, inventions and/or economic enterprises over a sustained period of years. The medal will be awarded in conjunction with the American Society for Composites 36th Annual Technical Virtual Conference on Sept. 19-22, 2021 organized by Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (College Station, Texas, U.S.).
The Honors Committee includes:
- John W. Gillespie, Jr.: Phillips Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and director of the University of Delaware’s CCM. He is a Fellow of SPE, SME, ASC and SAMPE, and recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers Charles Pankow Award for Innovation, ASC Outstanding Researcher, ASTM Wayne W. Stinchcomb Memorial Award and SME Jud Hall Composites Manufacturing Award. He is the author of more than 875 articles, 19 book chapters and 23 patents.
- Suresh G. Advani: G. W. Laird Professor of Mechanical Engineering and associate director, CCM at the University of Delaware, author of more than 350 journal papers and the lead author of a text on “Process Modeling in Composite Manufacturing Processes.” Professor Advani is a Fellow of ASME and is the North American editor for the journal Composites Part A: Applied Science and Manufacturing. Professor Advani received the Outstanding Researcher Award for 2015 from American Society of Composites and the Educator of the Year award from SPE.
- Erik T. Thostenson: Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering. Professor Thostenson is the recipient of the NSF CAREER and AFOSR Young Investigator awards and was named the inaugural recipient of the American Society of Composites Young Composites Researcher Award. Prof. Thostenson’s research has been cited widely in scientific literature, with more than 21,000 citations and 140+ publications.
- Tsu-Wei Chou: Unidel Pierre S. du Pont Chair at the University of Delaware, member Emeritus is a highly decorated scientist and a Fellow of ASME, ASM, ASC, ACerS, TMS and AIAA, and a recipient of the Charles Russ Richards Memorial Award, the Worcester Reed Warner Medal and the Nadai Medal of ASME, the Albert Sauveur Achievement Award of ASM International, the Distinguished Research Award and the ASC/DEStech Award in Composites of the American Society for Composites, and more.
