Argosy welcomes new team members

Joe Baumann joins Argosy (New York, N.Y., U.S.) as its new global CFO and Li Xiao joins Argosy Aerospace Material Ltd. (Shanghai, China), as its new general manager. Baumann comes to Argosy with extensive CFO and COO experience, a successful track record with various companies and industries, and strong international experience. Xiao increases and expands Argosy’s capacity to provide focal and local leadership for Argosy’s China-based businesses.

“Joe brings both the skill sets and the leadership attributes of exceptional management, both dynamic and collaborative; entrepreneurial focus, and complete integrity combined with his knowledge and experience in M&A, risk management, strategy and operations, which will be critical as Argosy implements its growth strategy,” Paul Marks, Argosy CEO, says. “Li comes to Argosy with extensive general management leadership experience, including general manager positions at an international investment and consulting firm, and U.S.-based electric motor (part of a PE portfolio company), building materials, chemical and thermal management imaging companies. He will provide in-country management and leadership to ensure the success of our ambitious plans.”

Ryan Flugel, Argosy president, is confident Baumann and Xiao will make immediate contributions to the Argosy organization and continue to build upon the strong foundation already in place. “As we continue the aggressive expansion of our footprint and product portfolio, we need adept operators in these key positions to drive success,” Flugel says.

Argosy is a global supplier of advanced composite materials and related supplies to the aerospace and composites industries.

 

Swinburne announces 2023 Founder In Residence for aviation advancements

Dovetail Electric Aviation Business Operations Manager, Rachael Barritt, who has become Swinburne’s first Founder In Resident for 2023.

Australia is said to be poised to become a leader in hydrogen and battery- powered air travel, thanks to Swinburne University of Technology’s (Melbourne) first newly announced Founder In Residence.

Dovetail Electric Aviation (Rose Bay, New South Wales, Australia) Business Operations Manager, Rachael Barritt, will work alongside Swinburne’s top researchers to develop new ideas and ventures that can have a real-world impact in aviation and aerospace.

Barritt will work closely with the team from Swinburne’s Aerostructures Innovation Research Hub (AIR Hub), using the hub’s capabilities in intelligent manufacturing processes, advanced composite materials, advanced air operations and sustainable fuels. 

The Founder In Residence initiative is designed to bring experienced entrepreneurs into Swinburne to supercharge commercialization pathways, supported by Swinburne’s facilities, capabilities and research.

Barritt is the first Swinburne Founder In Residence to be announced for 2023. The program will drive market-led venture creation across three of Swinburne’s flagship research areas — space and aerospace technology, innovative planet and medical technology. The program will create new ventures of mutual benefit to entrepreneurs and researchers, fast-tracking technological advancements and developing robust market-ready solutions.

“As a Founder In Residence at Swinburne, I am excited to be working at the forefront of aerospace technology,” Barritt says. “This program represents the future of innovation. Working with leading experts from industry and academia, we will help translate cutting-edge research into sustainable, real-world solutions for the aviation industry.”

Composites Evolution unveils new senior leadership team

Composites Evolution (Chesterfield, U.K.), part of the Clockpress Holdings group of companies, announces a new senior leadership team following its recent takeover.

The specialist prepreg manufacturer has appointed Brendon Weager, Gemma Williams, Mike Harrison and Rochelle Helliwell to the team that will work alongside Clockpress’ Chris Barnes and Sam Kirk to drive the business forward. As part of the change, the original founder and owner of Composites Evolution, Gordon Bishop, is stepping away from the company.

“The recent investment by Clockpress Holdings and appointment of the new leadership team provides us with an excellent platform to support the next phase of our growth,” Brendon Weager, technical director at Composites Evolution, says. “The business has already made a great start to 2023 and the future is exciting, as we continue to deliver industry-leading composite prepregs and customer service to our customers.”

The new team’s primary focus is to accelerate the implantation of those strategic plans, with the ultimate goal of establishing Composites Evolution as the number one partner for specialist prepregs, through innovation, sustainability, customer service and responsiveness.

New and existing customers will have a chance to meet Mike and Rochelle on the UK Pavilion at JEC World 2023.

 

Mahr Inc. appoints general manager of sales

Mahr (Providence, R.I., U.S.), a global manufacturer of precision measurement equipment used for dimensional metrology, announced that Jon-Michael Raymond has joined the company as general manager sales for the U.S. and Canada. In addition to field sales, he will oversee Mahr’s Engineered Solutions business as well as marketing, product management, applications engineering, service, customer resource center and distribution teams.

Raymond has served in sales/marketing leadership roles with companies including Starrett, PFERD North America, Osborn and Saint-Germain Abrasives. He has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Worcester State University (Massachusetts) and a master of business administration from Assumption University (Massachusetts).

“Jon-Michael brings a unique combination of financial and marketing experience together, having served previous roles as a financial analyst, market manager and sales executive with prior employers. We’re excited to have him join us in helping drive and manage Mahr’s growth, building our presence in emerging markets while continuing to serve the most advanced metrology needs of customers across traditional industries,” Bryan Orr, VP sales Americas and executive director of Mahr Inc., says. “As we grow, our teams remain true to purpose, always focused on helping solve each customer’s unique metrology needs, even as their requirements change and become more advanced.”

Raymond’s appointment follows a year of significant growth, with Mahr adding 24 new employees, a new state-of-the-art demo area to enhance customer collaboration and several innovative new products in 2022.

Norplex (Postville, Iowa, U.S.) welcomes Eric Howard as director of sales for Norplex Advanced Composites (Manhattan, Mon., U.S.). With a growing team and a new custom-built manufacturing center, Norplex Advanced Composites is expanding its capabilities and commitment to advanced materials; Howard’s experience in the advanced composites market deepens this commitment.

Norplex Advanced Composites is positioned to deliver a growing line of prepregs at mid-market volumes and improved customer support and service. The 32,000-square-foot facility in Manhattan, Montana, houses a custom-built direct impregnation hot melt prepreg line with the capabilities to run various fabrics and unidirectional (UD) rovings, and the ability to offer a range of diverse chemistries. 

“We are excited for Eric to join the Norplex Advanced Composites team,” Denny Ford, VP of Norplex, says. “With his extensive experience and collaborative approach, Eric will be integral to helping our customers unlock opportunities with our materials.”

Howard comes to Norplex with more than 14 years of experience in the advanced composites industry, having served in various technical and business leadership roles. Eric spent over a decade with Toray Advanced Composites (formerly TenCate, TAC, Morgan Hill, Calif., U.S.) where he most recently served as the director of aerospace sales. Before going to TAC, he was a manufacturing engineer at ATK Space Systems (now Northrop Grumman, Falls Church, Va., U.S.) responsible for manufacturing composite hardware in the space and defense industries.  He holds a BS in mechanical engineering and a master’s in business economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
