Carbon fiber sheet molding compound (CF-SMC) is an established manufacturing solution for lightweight composite structures requiring design flexibility, part integration, and efficient compression molding. Mitsubishi Chemical Group (MCG) now brings its proven Forged Molding Compound (FMC) platform to U.S. manufacturing through domestic production of a non-styrene-based CF-SMC.
The combination of local supply, vertically integrated carbon fiber manufacturing and proprietary non-styrene-based vinyl ester chemistry provides North American manufacturers with a new option for lightweight composite structures in mobility, defense, industrial and emerging aerospace markets.
A proven CF-SMC platform
CF-SMC is not a new material technology. For many years, CF-SMC has offered designers an attractive solution for applications where lightweight construction, complex geometries and manufacturing efficiency must be balanced.
Unlike traditional laminate-based thermoset composites, CF-SMC enables compression molding of highly integrated structures with complex three-dimensional geometries. Ribbed structures, variable wall thicknesses, molded-in inserts and consolidated assemblies can often be produced in a single molding operation, reducing secondary assembly requirements and supporting efficient production.
These characteristics have contributed to the successful adoption of FMC materials in commercial applications throughout Japan and Europe. Rather than replacing continuous fiber composites, CF-SMC expands the range of applications that can benefit from carbon fiber by enabling designs that prioritize manufacturability, design freedom and cost efficiency alongside structural performance.
Why domestic production matters
As manufacturers evaluate new materials, technical performance is only one part of the decision process. Increasingly, supply chain considerations have become equally important.
For many North American customers, domestic sourcing has become a key requirement when evaluating materials for defense, mobility, industrial and other strategically important applications. Local production can simplify procurement, improve supply chain resilience and provide customers with greater confidence in long-term material availability.
To support these market requirements, MCG has established U.S. manufacturing capability for FMC, making the material available directly from domestic production. This represents an important milestone for a technology platform that has already demonstrated success in other global markets and is now positioned to support North American manufacturing programs more directly.

Introducing non-styrene-based FMC
In addition to domestic production, MCG's latest FMC offering incorporates a proprietary non-styrene-based vinyl ester resin system. Many composite manufacturers are increasingly seeking materials that can simplify facility requirements, reduce concerns associated with styrene emissions and integrate more easily into existing production environments.
Traditional SMC technologies have relied on styrene-heavy resin formulations for decades and continue to serve many applications successfully. However, many carbon fiber composite part manufacturers are not configured to handle styrene-loaded materials and may prefer non-styrene-based manufacturing solutions.
MCG’s new resin technology was developed to address these requirements while maintaining the manufacturing advantages that have made CF-SMC an established manufacturing solution.
The new vinyl ester system offers the handling and storage advantages traditionally associated with SMC materials, including room temperature storage and ease of material handling. It also provides an attractive alternative to epoxy-based systems for many applications.
The result is a material that combines the established manufacturing advantages of CF-SMC with a non-styrene-based processing environment, creating a new option for manufacturers looking to expand their composite manufacturing capabilities.
Importantly, this new product extends the established FMC technology platform already used in commercial applications in Japan and Europe.
