Radius Engineering Inc. (Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.) delivers net-shape composites technology to aerospace customers via engineering, tooling and equipment. The company’s new line of Multi+ 2K Injection Systems, for example, are well-suited for resin transfer molding (RTM), same qualified resin transfer molding (SQRTM) and vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) infusion processes and control of multiple component polymers up to 300°C.

Radius Multi+ 2K Injectors use a servo-driven piston and hydrostatic pressure to govern resin flow and internal tool pressure. This enables precise flow control regardless of high pressure or vacuum environments. This equipment can also dispense pre-mixed 1K resin like a conventional single-component system when desired, according to the company. Using either method the process is highly automated with limited resin handling and almost no operator involvement during the cure.

Multi+ Injection Systems precisely control key infusion parameters:

  • Vacuum degas of components to 0.1 mbar (0.075 mm Hg)
  • Heating to 180°C (optional HT Systems to 300°C)
  • Pressure to 12 bar/174 psi (optional to 30 bar/435 psi)
  • A 5-2,000 cc/min flowrate with ±1cc accuracy  (optional to 5,000+ cc/min)

Radius’ Multi+ Injection equipment features a robust but simplified design, which aids in easier material loading and cleanup, and a hard anodized aluminum or stainless (HT system) construction. It retains redundant temperature and pressure sensors for process safety. Capacity of 12,000 cc per component (or an optional 24,000 cc) is possible, and ratios are available from 100:100 through 100:3. Static or dynamic mixers suited to resin system. A complete Radius FloWare and data acquisition is linked to Radius Workcells, and can be integration to a customer’s ERP/SPC systems. Moreover, systems can be linked together for larger automatic injections, up to 225 L (60 gal.).

Radius is an AS-9100D-certified company leveraging 35 years of composites processing experience. It helps customers achieve high levels of quality and productivity using out-of-autoclave methods including RTM, SQRTM and VARTM.
