Optimized, automated manufacturing concepts for composite parts, SMC semi-finished materials
JEC World 2024: The AutoCut Pick&Place and Cube SMC line from Schmidt & Heinzmann aim to deliver more modernized manufacturing capabilities with improved efficiency and process control.
Schmidt & Heinzmann (Bruschal, Germany) is presenting solutions for the automated manufacture of components — such as the AutoCut Pick&Place — as well as sheet molding compound (SMC) semi-finished materials via the Cube at the Baden-Württemberg Pavilion.
The AutoCut Pick&Place, combining several process steps, enables customers to produce their stacks from SMC or dry fiber fabrics more efficiently. Highly compact, the process automates material cutting, weighing and stacking of SMC materials as well as dry fiber fabrics. AutoCut provides features such as:
- Simple programming thanks to generic software for fast and material-saving production;
- Different cutting technologies for various materials; and
- Automated compensation function for correct stack weights.
The new, small footprint model also gives users the option of stacking and weighing the plies directly onto the AutoCut. In this case, an integrated gantry system with a multifunctional gripper builds the stack. Compared to a traditional machine concept, a handling robot can be saved. This option offers faster handling (shorter traveling distance) and more rapid installation and startup via integrated functions.
The Cube SMC line, also highlighted, is exclusively designed to meet the needs of SMC material production. The Cube’s adapted layout is said to meet current high production requirements with its compact design while also taking into account the future requirements of a modern working environment. New controls and sensor concept for recording, analyzing and storing production data, brings SMC production into the digital age.
Accordingly, the Cube achieves live analysis and logging of all process data for each single centimeter of material, maximum reproducibility and low scrap rates, a roving tension optimized unwinding creel for fault-free mass production and a novel de-aeration concept for minimized air entrapment. Additional features involve ergonomic operability of key elements, decentralized electronics (no external electrical cabinet), a compact design with a 50% footprint reduction and an enclosed system for a cleaner contaminated environment.
