Upcycling: Bring Waste Materials Back into Structural Parts

June 08, 2023 |

This webinar will focus on how AFT allows customers to produce structural parts with a combination of composite waste and continuous fiber-reinforced preforms.

In a previous webinar, 9T Labs presented the benefits of additive fusion technology (AFT) with specific applications. This upcoming webinar will focus on how AFT enables structural parts to be manufactured using continuous fiber-reinforced preforms and recycled fibers originating from composite waste.

Agenda:

  • Quick introduction of 9T Labs and AFT
  • Material streams and their impact on sustainability and costs
  • Example of a specific application
Presenter 1

Presenter 1:

Martin Eichenhofer

CEO and Co-Founder

Martin Eichenhofer is the cofounder and CEO of 9T Labs. He has an impressive academic background with one each of a bachelor's degree, master's degree, MBA and Ph.D. under his belt. His university path is actually deeply tied to his entrepreneurial career—since his idea for 9T Labs occurred to him during his master's studies, his MBA was motivated by his desire to build 9T Labs and he got his Ph.D. after realizing he didn't have enough of a scientific foundation for it yet. Martin also met both of his cofounders, Giovanni Cavolina and Chester Houwink, during his Ph.D. studies.

Presenter 2:

Jordan Kalman

Application Engineer

Jordan is an application engineer supporting customers in designing, manufacturing and testing composite applications at scale, including recycling in the development considerations. He is passionate towards developing sustainable engineering processes, allowing increased performance while having a significantly lower impact on the world's precious resources. He obtained master's and bachelor's degrees in aerospace engineering from Toronto Metropolitan University. During his studies, he led R&D projects leveraging additive manufacturing and recycling of thermoplastic composites in the Facility for Research on Aerospace Materials and Engineered Structures (FRAMES).

Presenter 3:

Dr. Eduardo Barocio

Director, Composites Additive Manufacturing and Simulation Consortium; Purdue University

Dr. Barocio is the director of the composites additive manufacturing and simulation consortium at the Purdue Composites Manufacturing and Simulation Center. He obtained a Ph.D. from Purdue University and a bachelor's degree in mechatronics engineering from Tecnologico de Monterrey. Dr. Barocio's research is in modeling and simulation of composites manufacturing processes as well as in developing hybrid manufacturing processes for composites. His work is primarily in the field of extrusion deposition additive manufacturing with fiber-reinforced polymers. During his Ph.D., Dr. Barocio led the development of the composites additive manufacturing research instrument (CAMRI) and codeveloped a comprehensive physics-based process simulation workflow for additive manufacturing called Additive3D.
