Seco Tools (Troy, Mich.) has announced the Jabro line of routers developed for the machining of composite materials. The product line features five solid carbide styles with cylindrical shank diameters that range from 3 to 20 mm (0.1 to 0.8 inches), depending on the style. Each router features a DURA high-performance chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond coating, which is thicker than traditional CVD coatings. According to the company, the DURA coating provides a good thermal and abrasive barrier for use in machining composite materials. The line comprises the JC840 Left-Right Helix Router for slotting operations in carbon- and/or glass-fiber composites; the JC850 Light Helix Ballnose Router for 3-D copy milling of carbon fiber and polyetheretherketone (PEEK)-based composites; the JC860 Honeycomb Router for slotting or side milling of honeycomb materials with carbon and/or glass top layers and paper and/or aluminum honeycomb; the JC870 Diamond Cut Router for slotting applications in various layered carbon and/or glass fiber materials; and the JC880 Light Helix Router for maximum material removal in slotting and side milling of carbon fiber and PEEK-based composites.

From the CW Archives: Drilling is not for the faint of heart
This edition of From the CW Archives revisits CW’s first plant tour — a visit to the F-35 FAL in Fort Worth, Texas — and a story by Ginger Gardiner a few years later. Both offer lessons on how to perform stacked drilling through composite and metallic materials.
