Toray begins carbon fiber production in South Korea
Toray's new carbon fiber facility in Gumi will produce 2,200 tons annually, to be followed next year by a second 2,500-ton plant.
The Global Post reported on April 6 that Toray Advanced Materials Korea Inc., a unit of carbon fiber manufacturer Toray Industries Inc. (Tokyo, Japan), has started commercial production of carbon fiber at its South Korean facility.
The plant in Gumi will produce 2,200 tons of carbon fiber annually, the South Korean unit said. According to the report, Toray Advanced Materials Korea says it plans to start work on its second carbon fiber plant, which will produce 2,500 tons of carbon fiber a year beginning March 2014.
Once the second plant is completed, Toray's annual production capacity of carbon fiber in South Korea will increase to 4,700 tons. In March 2012, Taekwang Industrial Co., a local chemical fiber company, began carbon fiber production in Ulsan and produces 1,500 tons annually. Hyosung Corp. is scheduled to start commercial operation of its 2,000-ton carbon fiber plant in Jeonju in mid-April. Hyosung plans to increase its carbon fiber production capacity to 17,000 tons by 2020.
