The National Center for Advanced Materials Performance (NCAMP) at Wichita State University’s National Institute for Aviation Research (Wichita, Kan.) announced on July 6 the release of composite material property data, statistical analysis reports and material and process specifications for Hexply 8552 prepreg, from Hexcel (Stamford, Conn.).
The lamina and laminate material property data were generated under U.S. Federal Aviation Admin. (FAA) oversight and according to the requirements of NCAMP Standard Operating Procedure NSP 100. The test panels, test specimens and test setups were conformed by, and the testing was witnessed by, the FAA. The statistical analysis reports were generated in accordance with procedures in Composite Material Handbook 17 (CMH-17) Revision G.
These Hexply 8552 documents are the first set of qualifications completed by NCAMP. The data and documents will be submitted by NCAMP to CMH-17 and the Society of Automotive Engineers for further publication. The draft documents for other qualification programs, such as those for ACG MTM45-1 and Cytec 5250-5, are under review by NCAMP members on the NCAMP Web portal. The program was sponsored by NASA Langley Research Center (Langley, Va.), and Hexcel donated the materials. Cessna Aircraft Co. (Wichita, Kan.) fabricated more than 500 test panels for the baseline testing. Part fabricators may use the material property data, allowables and specifications by demonstrating the ability to reproduce the original material properties, a process known as equivalency. Equivalency program participants are Hawker Beechcraft, Spirit AeroSystems, ATK Space Systems, Boeing Helicopters, Goodrich Aerostructures, Israel Aircraft Industries, Gulfstream Aerospace, Northrop Grumman, Bell Helicopter and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics.
