Composite radio antenna to be featured at Carbon Fiber 2013

The DVA-1 radio antenna features a one-piece, 261-sq-m carbon fiber composite reflector and a new design approach for high-volume composites production.

CompositesWorld, publisher of High-Performance Composites and Composites Technology magazines, as well as the CompositesWorld Weekly newsletter, reports that it has begun preparations for the Carbon Fiber 2013 conference, Dec. 9-12 at the Crowne Plaza Knoxville in Knoxville, Tenn., USA, near the Oak Ridge National Labs.

Among the presentations at the conference is one given by Gordon Lacy, mechanical engineer at NRC Canada on the design and fabrication of the DVA-1 radio antenna for the Square Kilometre Array. It features a one-piece 261-m2/2,809-ft2 carbon fiber composite reflector, a rim-supported stressed-skin design and a new design approach suitable for high-volume composites production.
