3-D beam weaving
3-D weaving pioneer Biteam (Bromma, Sweden) displayed at JEC Europe 2014 the first produced sample — an I-beam demonstrator — made using a new weaving technology capable of directly manufacturing beam-like 3-D profiles in which fiber orientations in the web and flange are, respectively, +Ɵ°/-Ɵ° and 0°/90°. Developed for the motorsports, automobile and building/construction markets, among others, the beam’s web and flange fibers intersect in the z-direction (through the thickness), making the preform delamination-resistant and, thus, more capable of bearing shear and tensile loads and imparting structural stability during premold handling and impregnation steps.
