Long-fiber thermoplastics specialist PlastiComp (Winona, Minn.) has announced the development of a new, translucent, long fiber-reinforced compound. This patent-pending thermoplastic urethane (TPU)-based product is suitable for applications where see-through quality or contact transparency imparts added functionality. When molded, the product contains 20 to 40 percent (by weight) long-glass fibers. Its surface is smooth and translucent, and it maintains the mechanical properties of a standard long glass-reinforced thermoplastic compound. Potential applications include medical devices, pumps, filters, power tools and sports equipment.
