Shuttle loom for complex reinforcement fabrics

The new Mageba (Bernkastel-Kues, Germany) SSL MV shuttle loom is designed for complex fabrics, such as multidimensional, multilayer fabric for near-net shapes made of glass or carbon fiber. The loom’s new design reportedly increases loom output significantly and also makes possible the creation of new weaves. Designed for light- to medium-weight fabrics, it works with a four-shuttle weft insertion. The fabric width is up to 300 mm/11.8 inches, and the weft insertion rate is up to 100 wefts per shuttle, per minute. Shedding is done using a special jacquard with harness cords individually controlled by miniservomotors, which enable flexible, freely programmable, warp thread-controlled shedding across the entire fabric width. This flexibility allows the loom to generate several sheds at the same time so that multishuttle, simultaneous weft insertion is possible. Currently, weft insertion of three shuttles can be done simultaneously, tripling fabric production (said to be a first). In addition, multidimensional fabric structures with up to four varying weft thread materials can be developed with this configuration, says the company, because each shuttle is equipped with varying weft yarn, and each shuttle movement, as well as the shedding, is individually programmable per weft insertion. Other loom features are variable weft density, a V-reed for varying the width of the fabric and an exchangeable takeoff to move profile fabric in a manner that protects the fabric.
