KraussMaffei has announced the launch of the largest lab system for polyurethane (PUR) flooding in the industry at its Parsdorf site, offering a comprehensive solution for the production of vehicle outer skin components and other applications.
KraussMaffei's ColorForm process stands out for its ability to coat thermoplastic components directly in the mold with a polyurethane or polyurea layer, eliminating the need for separate painting processes. This innovation not only adheres to strict environmental regulations but also reduces resource consumption in logistics and handling.
The centerpiece of this advanced lab system is the MXW injection molding machine, featuring a 45,000 kN clamping force. It integrates two RimStar metering systems and three different mixing heads, enabling polyurethane material discharge rates of up to 500 grams per second. This "all-in-one" setup encompasses injection molding, PUR flooding, parts handling, post-processing and surface treatment.
The ColorForm lab system's design allows for the production of sample plates and features a swivel plate and widened clamping plates. The RimStar Flex 8/8 metering system, equipped with MK5 and MK8 mixing heads, manages quantities of up to 50 grams per second and 250 grams per second, respectively. Additionally, the RimStar Compact 16/29, with the newly developed MK10-3K mixing head, achieves output rates of up to 500 grams per second.
The automation of the lab system includes a flame treatment station to activate thermoplastics, such as polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), and polyethylene (PE) for better adhesion with the polyurethane, as well as a trimming cell.
Enhancing the system's efficiency are two unique digital products from KraussMaffei. The APCplus machine function on the MX4500 acts as an autopilot for the injection molding process, ensuring weight-constant components by adjusting the changeover point and holding pressure based on melt viscosity. The dataXplorer monitors the entire process, recording over 1,000 machine signals with high precision, providing complete traceability and a detailed view of all subprocesses.
