J. Schmalz GmbH (Glatten, Germany) showcased its SCG grippers for composite materials at JEC Europe 2012. The grippers are said to be appropriate for flexible fabrics or thin foils. They operate via suction, with minimum air consumption and no contamination of the process area, says the company. Another product, SNG needle grippers, are intended for handling flexible fabrics that are difficult to pick and place with vacuum because of their porous nature. SNG grippers have needles that are retracted by springs or compressed air and reportedly minimize residual holes in delicate fabrics.
