"Green" cast polymer resins

Interplastic Corp. (St. Paul, Minn.) has announced new Silmar resins for cast polymer applications. They contain postconsumer recycled and rapidly renewable materials and earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) points, according to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The resins reportedly exhibit desirable thermal shock performance, color consistency, cure properties and crack resistance. Products include SIL90BA-220ECO, an unsaturated polyester designed for general-purpose cast marble applications, with 5.5 percent rapidly renewable content and 15 percent postconsumer recycled content; SIL93BE-330ECO, an acrylic-modified, UV-stabilized, unsaturated polyester for solid surface applications, with the same renewable and recycled content; and SIL90BA-585ECO, an unsaturated polyester based on Silmar’s 585 cast marble line. It contains 26 percent rapidly renewable content.
