Dow Formulated Systems (Midland, Mich., USA), a business unit of The Dow Chemical Co. has introduced the COMPAXX 700 foam core system for wind blades, the first in a line of new core materials for wind blade applications. Dow says sandwich panel fatigue testing following Germanischer Lloyd requirements showed COMPAXX 700 exhibits long-term dynamic behavior and shear strength properties yielding lightweight composites with good mechanical strength and fatigue resistance. The manufacturer also reports a peel strength about three times higher than the historical reference of core material (PVC 60 kg/m3), and a high run-to-run consistency that is said to lead to predictable mechanical properties.
