Integran Technologies Inc. (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) offers Nanovar, a hard-metal coating for composite tooling. Carbon composite tooling is used extensively in preproduction, but sees limited use in production, according to the company, because previously available hard-metal surface coatings have exhibited poor thickness uniformity and have tended to be porous and brittle. This new nanostructured coating, however, reportedly has hardness comparable to tooling steel. To maintain coating/tool adhesion during repeated thermal cycles, the coating’s coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is closely matched to that of the carbon composite substrate.
