Carbide drill tools for carbon composites

Seco Tools has announced two additions to its line of Feedmax solid carbide drills with geometries that are said to avoid delamination upon entry or exit when drilling carbon fiber composite materials.

Seco Tools (Troy, Mich.) has announced two additions to its line of Feedmax solid carbide drills with geometries that are said to avoid delamination upon entry or exit when drilling carbon fiber composite materials. The new C1 geometry features sharp optimized double points; the C2 geometry is specifically designed to drill stacked carbon fiber composites with an aluminum or titanium outer layer. To combat the abrasive properties of carbon fiber composites, both drills incorporate a polycrystalline diamond coating, which is said to provide good dimensional tolerance. The new drills are 5xD with diameters ranging from 0.1260 to 0.5 inch (3.2 mm to 12.7 mm). Both tool types have through-coolant holes.
