Poraver (Innisfil, ON, Canada) will emphasize its expanded glass granules — tiny, porous spheres of foamed glass. Made from 100% post-consumer recycled glass in a controlled process that ensures reliable, uniform quality, Poraver is available in granule sizes typical for cenospheres (0.04-0.125 mm, 0.1-0.3 mm and 0.25-0.5 mm) but also in larger diameters up to 8 mm. Poraver has low density similar to cenospheres. Cenospheres are a by-product of coal-fired power plants, harvested from fly ash. They are hollow ceramic balls with a maximum size of about 0.5 mm. Their major applications are in drilling cements, construction materials and thermoset plastics. Poraver expanded glass granules offer an alternative for many cenosphere applications, including thermoset, insulating and high-temperature applications. Poraver is pure glass and air (about 80% air). In the size-range typical for cenospheres (0.25 - 0.5 mm) Poraver weighs just 0.7 g/cm3, making it significantly buoyant in water. Like cenospheres, Poraver grains are spherical, but other physical properties are different and offer distinct advantages over cenospheres. The porous structure of Poraver, for example, ensures good mechanical bonding between the spheres and the binder matrix. Another advantage of Poraver is its microporous structure, which gives greater durability to its fundamental performance properties. Even if spheres are broken during mixing, Poraver will still act as a lightweight filler, whereas hollow spheres lose their properties completely if broken.
