Safe Technology Ltd. (Sheffield, U.K.) has partnered with Firehole Composites (Laramie, Wyo.) to launch fe-safe/Composites, a new software module for the advanced fatigue analysis of composites. The manufacturers note that historically, predicting fatigue life in composites has been challenging because even simple load states lead to complex behavior in the individual composite constituents. Further, the effects of frequency and load history can be dealt with adequately only by using physics-based approaches. The fe-safe/Composites software uses Firehole’s Helius:Fatigue technology platform, which combines the constituent-based failure analysis method of Multicontinuum Theory (MCT) with the well-established kinetic theory of fracture, to introduce a new technology for fatigue life prediction in composite structures. It allows the user to calculate complex loading histories that up until now have only been available for use with metals. Users can simulate real, industrial loading conditions and combine the analysis of composites and the analysis of metals in the same run.
