Adhesive and surface film for out-of-autoclave prepregs

Advanced Composites Group Ltd. has developed a new adhesive system (MTA241) and a surface improvement film (MTF316) to complement and enhance its line of out-of-autoclave carbon fiber pregregs.

Advanced Composites Group Ltd. (ACG, Heanor, Derbyshire, U.K.) has developed a new adhesive system (MTA241) and a surface improvement film (MTF316) to complement and enhance its recently released line of out-of-autoclave (OOA) carbon fiber prepregs. MTA241 adhesive was developed for applications where it is desirable to exploit the lower-temperature curing capabilities of ACG’s MTM45-1 and MTM46 prepregs. Following a full postcure, MTA241 reportedly offers the same performance spectrum as the company’s HTA240 adhesive, which must be cured at a higher temperature. The surface improvement film, MTF316, addresses surface quality issues that can be a potential problem when curing prepreg at lower pressures, and is compatible with the entire range of ACG’s OOA prepregs. This film can be supplied on a number of carriers/scrims and, according to the company, provides a paint-ready surface directly from the tool. It also can be supplied on a conductive metal mesh to form an in-situ lightning strike protection system. Also new: HTM60, the company’s latest epoxy prepreg formulated for high-temperature molding. Designed as an alternative to cyanate ester and bismaleimide (BMI) systems in motorsport applications, the prepreg’s resin system, when fully postcured, reportedly is capable of generating an onset Tg of 230°C/446°F and, when wet, maintains a Tg of 155°C/311°F. It also adheres directly to Nomex (aramid paper) honeycomb in sandwich constructions, and its resin is compatible with a range of unidirectional, biaxial and woven carbon fiber materials.
