Teijin, Safran sign master contract for composite material supply

Some of Tejin’s high-performance composite material supply contracted for the production of Safran aircraft parts will be manufactured by U.S.-based Renegade Materials Corp.

On Oct. 27 Teijin Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) announced that a long-term master agreement has been signed with Safran S.A. (Paris, France). According to Teijin, the contract establishes the foundation for the supply of Teijin’s high-performance composite materials dedicated to the manufacturing of next-generation aircraft parts — including commercial, defense or space applications — of which the company has been supplying to Safran for the last 25 years.

The contract also intends to reinforce Teijin and Safran’s collaboration to meet the challenges of the aviation market, creating advanced technologies that lower production costs and environmental impact. Some of the first high-performance materials supplied to Safran, Teijin notes, will be manufactured by U.S.-based Renegade Materials Corp. (Miamisburg, Ohio, U.S.), a prepreg supplier for high temperature-resistant resin and safe, non-toxic polyimide prepreg materials, which Teijin acquired in 2019.

“The signature of this master agreement materializes the growing relation between Safran and Teijin. Safran expects to reach new steps in aeronautical performance and competitiveness, thanks to the innovation capacity of Teijin in high-performance materials,” says Thierry Viguier, Safran vice president, Materials Purchasing. Shukei Inui, general manager of Tejin’s Carbon Fiber Business Unit also adds that the long-term master contact will further strengthen Tejin’s position as a reliable material supplier in the aerospace industry.

Stated as the group’s Strategic Focus in its Medium-term Management Plan for 2020–2022, Teijin is pushing forward its development of mid- to downstream applications for aircraft, targeting annual sales in this field of more than $900 million USD by around 2030.
