Req 158020 Senior Product Design Engineer — Phoenix

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior level Product Design Engineer with a solid background in composite design to join Honeywell's Aerospace team supporting our Mechanical Center of Excellence Team.

Honeywell Aerospace is a leading global provider of integrated avionics, engines, systems and service solutions for aircraft manufacturers, airlines, business and general aviation, military, space and airport operations.

This position is based based at Honeywell's facility in Phoenix, Ariz.

This position will provide support for new and existing products including environmental control systems, aircraft propulsion engines, auxiliary power units, landing gear, fuel controls, avionics, guidance and electrical systems.

Primary responsibilities include support for materials and processes involved in the design and manufacture of parts. In-depth expertise in composites, hand layup, resin transfer molding and compression molding is critical.

Responsibilities include mainly design support. Additional responsibilities may include in-sourcing/transition support, specification maintenance, process documentation, approval of suppliers and components with composites processes, conducting maintenance audits to ensure specification and process compliance, support the determination of Root Cause and Corrective Action associated with process escapes, and identification of productibility opportunities and cost reduction.

Technical skills include a broad understanding of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP), basic understanding of polymerization, mechanical and design requirements for aerospace components, effective communication and participation on teams with considerable focus in manufacturing and design.

The main customers of this position are the Honeywell engineering, manufacturing units and supply chain personnel (Sourcing) as well as the supply base.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree; mechanical, chemical or materials engineering or other related engineering degree
  • Minimum of four years of experience in a materials engineering, manufacturing engineering or composite materials processing role
  • Minimum three years experience working in composites manufacturing facilities
  • Must be U.S. citizen or resident alien (Green card) to support government programs and projects

Additional Qualifications:

  • Master's degree is preferred
  • Experience should include working in composites manufacturing facilities, developing process parameters, troubleshooting and process auditing.
  • Experience in the aerospace industry or with a supplier to aerospace industry preferred.
  • The job involves knowledge of aerospace materials specifications and the manufacturing processes used to make the part
  • Experience with NADCAP and AMS specification requirements is desirable
  • Strong teamwork skills, able to work in a variety of team roles within cross-functional teams
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Must be dedicated to customer satisfaction and demonstrate capability to establish and maintain strong business relationships with suppliers, customers and coworkers
  • Ability to facilitate interpersonal relationships; resolve conflicts tactfully; confidently, quickly and positively influence others

Success Attributes:

  • In-depth knowledge of and experience with aerospace materials processes, process selection and applications
  • Detailed understanding of relationship between design and supply chain manufacturing capability
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams to listen, influence and lead as needed
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in meeting commitments
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma tools
  • Broad understanding of materials, processes and applications
  • Knowledge of specification management
  • Understanding of aerospace procedures to approve suppliers for both special and fixed processes (e.g., auditing, root cause corrective action, quality systems, Nadcap)
