The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI, Knoxville, TN, US) reports that it is seeking undergraduate and graduate applicants for its five 10-week composites-related summer 2016 internship programs.

In addition to being involved in IACMI partner activities, interns will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art equipment and interact with scientists and engineers who are at the top of their fields.  Engaging in hands-on learning that is more project-based than traditional academic coursework is a critical way to refine your skill and intensify your interest in this exciting field of study.

Program participants will receive:

  • A competitive weekly stipend commensurate with academic level for the duration of the program: $600.00 for undergraduate and $750.00 for graduate students
  • A weekly housing allowance of $175.
  • Limited in- and out-bound travel assistance to and from their internship site.

This program is open to qualified graduate and undergraduate students. To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be a student in good standing at a regionally accredited US college or university
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 or the equivalent as verified by updated transcripts
  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of appointment
  • Provide proof of health insurance coverage. The participant can purchase health insurance coverage through Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).

The application period of the 2016 summer term is now open.

  • Wet compression molding

Old process updated and automated to offer lower cycle time and cost in BMW 7 Series plus potential for void-free, 65% fiber volume composite parts.

  • Fiber reinforcement forms

Fibers used to reinforce composites are supplied directly by fiber manufacturers and indirectly by converters in a number of different forms, which vary depending on the application. Here's a guide to what's available.

  • The matrix

The matrix binds the fiber reinforcement, gives the composite component its shape and determines its surface quality. A composite matrix may be a polymer, ceramic, metal or carbon. Here’s a guide to selection.
