Composites heating, cooling and machinery specialist RocTool (Le Bourget du Lac, France) reported on Feb. 3 that electronics manufacturing giant Ju Teng (Taichung, Taiwan) has implemented RocTool’s rapid molding technologies in more than one hundred assembly lines to increase production rates, creating what RocTool says is the largest composite factory in the world to produce smartphone and tactile tablet covers.

Ju Teng, one of the world's largest manufacturers of 3C products (computers, communication and consumer electronics), manufactured more than 1 million smartphone parts in the last quarter of 2013 with RocTool’s technologies. With the new equipment, RocTool says Ju Teng continues to increase production rates and aims to eventually produce 1 million parts per month.

“RocTool technologies allow mass production to interested actors such as Ju Teng, whose objective is to meet the growing demand for quality electronic parts designed with innovative materials. At present on the world scale, it represents the largest production of composite parts,” says Alexandre Guichard, RocTool’s CEO.

The parts are manufactured using composite comprised of thermoplastic resins reinforced with fiber glass, carbon fiber or other materials. The composite's mechanical performance and impact resistance allow production of parts less than 0.5 mm/0.02 inch thick.

RocTool technologies heat the molds by induction in seconds, which dramatically reduces production time and allows the manufacture of composite parts with optimum surface quality. “The major brands of tablet and smartphones are actively seeking ways of differentiation and performance improvement. The difference therefore leans more and more towards the covers, their materials, weight, thickness. With RocTool technologies, Ju Teng has not only developed an expertise on complex part designs that are removed directly from the mold, but also the finish which is essential to the touch and perceived quality. This is an unavoidable requirement in consumer electronics, to which we must answer," says Li-Yu Cheng, Ju Teng International CEO.

Ju Teng has invested more than $10 million (USD) in China to construct a building that can house more than a hundred RocTool-fitted production lines, as well as machines for cutting and finalizing of the parts. Ju Teng has developed significant production capacity in China and this partnership is targeting new markets for prestigious brands on their high-volume mass production programs.

To meet the demand of their Asian customers, RocTool has in turn, created a subsidiary in Taiwan and invested in a development center in Taichung equipped for rapid prototyping and technical customer support.
