Cevotec, Baumann announce partnership to industrialize FPP

Cevotec (Munich, Germany) and Baumann Automation (Amberg, Germany) have finalized a partnership for the assembly of Fiber Patch Placement (FPP) production systems. The industrialization of the FPP technology empowers manufacturers to build complex 3D parts from CFRP in high volumes but also with high quality. The first FPP system will be launched at JEC World 2017 (Mar. 14-16, Paris, France).

Baumann’s core strengths — the use of robotics to facilitate automation and the process integration required — are key to achieving the increased speed and agility of FPP production systems. Baumann Automation offers an ideal combination of standard modules and customized applications. The production system that the two companies are jointly building is the first fully automated production system for scalable serial production of high-quality, complex CFRP parts.

Direct 3D net-shape preforming eliminates additional forming processes. The FPP system only places fibers where needed, enabling varying laminate thickness throughout the part and tailoring per load paths. This reduces material usage compared to traditional processes by up to 30%, and material scrap by more than 50%. Fiber Patch Placement enables a new dimension of freedom in load-path oriented laminate design that leads to an increase of up to 150% in mechanical properties such as part strength and stiffness.

A spin-off from the Institute for Carbon Composites of Technische Universtität München, Cevotec develops and sells production systems, composite design software and offers development services for prototypes and serial products.

Founded in 1984, Baumann Automation has roughly 3,000 robotic cells and production lines in operation worldwide. The company’s 430 employees provide support from both the Bavarian headquarters as well as service centers in Europe, Asia and Central America.
