Boeing begins erection of 777X wing manufacturing plant

The Puget Sound Business Journal reports that the 120,774-sq-m building is starting to take shape, with manufacture of the carbon fiber composite wings to start in 2016.

The Puget Sound Business Journal (Seattle, WA, US) reported on Feb. 3 that construction has started at Boeing's $1 billion 777X wing plant in Everett, WA, US. The wings will be fabricated with carbon fiber composites, similar to the wings on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

According to the report, construction of the 120,774m2 building will employ 1,200 people, and consume 31,000 tons of steel and 170,000 tons of concrete. The facility is expected to be completed in 2016.

These wing structures will include skins and spars fabricated via automated tape laying (ATL), which will be cured in one of the facility's three 37m autoclaves. Parts will be assembled into wings in the adjacent aircraft assembly plant.

The fabrication of the wings by Boeing represents a departure for the company, which farmed out manufacture of the 787 wings to suppliers in Japan. Boeing officials have said that the company wants to have more direct control over 777X wing fabrication.
