ANAHEIM CONVENTION CENTER ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA IN ASSOCIATION WITH SHOW daily Produced by the editors of www.theCAMX.org/mobile theCAMX.org THURSDAY | October 20, 2022 ACE winners: New processes, materials, sustainability solutions By Hannah Mason, Technical Editor, CompositesWorld is week, the American Composites Manufacturers Assn. (ACMA, Arlington, Va., U.S.) announced the winners for its annual Awards in Composites Excellence (ACE) competition. ACE recognizes nominees and winners in six categories that include inno-vation in green design, application creativity, equipment and tooling innovation, material and process innovation, sustainability and potential for market growth. e ACE winners and nalists are displayed in the ACE Awards Pavilion in Hall C. Here is a summary of each of the 2022 winners by category: • Design: Innovation in Green Composites. is category winner is Windfall Inc., with its 3D printing lament made from decommis-sioned wind turbine blades. e company uses a proprietary recycling technology to reclaim berglass from wind blades at their end of life (EOL) and convert the material into a berglass-reinforced, graphene-en-hanced polypropylene (PP) lament for 3D printing. is lament, comprising 20% recy-cled ber lament by weight alongside virgin ber, was demonstrated in the manufacture of a multi-rotor drone. • Design: Most Creative Application. Structural Composites Inc.’s (Melbourne, Fla., U.S.) LamLight technology creatively combines electricity, ber optics and composites to produce a safe, e ective lighting system for use in aesthetic and func-tional lighting. Partners on the project include SCI, Guardtex, KanvasLight and CoCure. • Manufacturing: Equipment and Tooling Innovation. Zünd (Oak Creek, Wis., U.S.) took home this category for its Heat-Sealing Module (HSM), a tool for eliminating fraying when cutting and kitting. e HSM, which works in combination with the Zünd Power Rotary Tool on the Zünd Digital Cutting System, is designed to make cutting and kitting of thermoplastic composites more e cient and reliable.
