Vapormate 3 is a new wet-blast machine developed by Vapormatt (Guernsey, British Channel Islands, U.K. and Bath, Pa.) for surface preparation of postcured carbon fiber-reinforced (and other) composite parts prior to painting or coating. In the system’s 995-mm by 700-mm by 700-mm (about 39-inch by 27.5-inch by 27.5-inch) processing enclosure, water and fine abrasives in suspension are delivered by a slurry pump and accelerated by compressed air through a process nozzle to the part surface (the water-to-air pressure ratio can be varied). The slurry cleans and lightly abrades the surface, says the company. The water can be heated and mild detergent may be added to ensure effective removal of grease or oil.
