Zeon Chemicals L.P. (Louisville, Ky., U.S.A.) introduces its new toughened tackifier resin, DuoMod ZT-1, used to toughen resin infusion and liquid molding composite systems. Applications include epoxy RTM and VARTM resin systems used in aerospace, automotive, sporting goods and industrial applications. Supplied in an acetone solution to allow easy sprayup onto a variety of fabrics/fibers, the tackifier can be applied either by fabric producers or by RTM/VARTM processors prior to resin infusion. When used in combination with epoxy matrix resins, according to the company, it dramatically increases the interlaminar fracture toughness of the resin system and increases damage tolerance as measured by compression-after-impact (CAI) tests, without the detrimental loss of resin-dominated flexural properties or laminate glass transition temperature (Tg). Applied only to the fiber preform and not added to the matrix resin, it does not affect resin processing.
