AGY (Aiken, S.C.) announced at JEC Europe 2014 a range of S-2 Glass and E-glass yarns with thermoplastics-compatible sizings. Tailored for optimum fiber/resin bonding, the sizings also facilitate the use of the fibers in conventional conversion processes, such as fabric weaving. AGY says these more narrowly tailored fiber/sizing systems improve glass performance over fibers sized with multi-use sizings, making them more suitable for demanding applications in sporting goods, consumer electronics enclosures and medical devices. AGY says the new sizings are formulated to work with a wide range of polymer chemistries and are available on a range of fiber diameters. Sizings are said to be suitable for fiber combined with high-temperature resins — polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), polyetherimide (PEI) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) — as well as engineered polyamides (PA 6, PA 6.6, PA 11, PA 12), polycarbonate and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).
