BITEAM AB (Bromma, Sweden) has used its 3-D weaving process to develop woven T and Pi cross-section beam preforms with slender walls and fillets. The manufacturer says direct weaving of profiled preforms with fillets can strengthen joints and improve the load-bearing capability of a composite material in structural applications. In addition, weaving profiles with fillets expands a given cross-sectional profile family and is said to expand available profile types. Producing fillets in preforms directly during weaving also reportedly eliminates the need to reinforce joints with stitches, pins or rods.
