Vacuum system manufacturer Vacmobiles.com Ltd. (Auckland, New Zealand) has developed a compact, single-phase powered vacuum system that can be placed physically close to composite parts to be laminated. System joints are minimized in the units, and the few joints that are required are designed to remain leak-tight over a long working life. All user-demountable joints are O-ring sealed, and all fixed joints are double-locked and reportedly will not loosen, even in harsh service conditions. With a quality bag and mold and quality perimeter seal, Vacmobile vacuum systems reportedly will achieve better than 98 percent vacuum inside the bag. When used with the vacuum infusion process, the recommended vacuum distribution system can also reduce resin waste and eliminate resin pooling in the resin feed region of the bag. The machine has a footprint of 18.5 by 15.4 inches (470 mm by 390 mm) and can be used to infuse composite parts that require 2,150 ft²/200m²) of vacuum bag. Larger parts can be made using multiple machines, opening up possibilities for the on-site manufacture of wind turbine towers and blades.
