Advanced Composite Materials LLC (Greer, S.C.) has introduced, Si-tuff, a new diamond-like ceramic nanotube additive that has been shown to extend polyurethane (PU) coating life by 50 percent. A silicone carbide, Si-tuff is also being sold into the epoxy-based composites market, and the company is exploring its use in PU composites. Under development at a Tier 1 automotive supplier is Si-tuff’s use for an abrasive PU automotive application that requires abrasion resistance. There is also developmental work underway for use of Si-tuff in PES and PEEK composites in aerospace applications intended to replace higher-cost engineering resins. Si-tuff reportedly outperforms carbon nanotubes in performance and ease of dispersion. Whereas a carbon CNT can fracture in high-end thermoset composites, the new diamond-like ceramic has super-high modulus, reportedly rendering it unbreakable.
