Wacker Silicones (Munich, Germany) has developed Elastosil C, a reusable silicone rubber vacuum bag material that can be custom-sized to fit most tools. The bag is fabricated by the customer, using Wacker silicone products layered with a fabric. The user starts by brushing a layer of silicone onto a tool, lets it cure, and then brushes on another layer. Next, a layer of flexible fabric is cut to size and pressed onto the tacky silicone. A third or fourth layer of silicone is brushed on top of the fabric; this is allowed to cure and then the bag is demolded. Post-cure is required. The manufacturer says the custom-sized, reusable bag can be repositioned on the tool in 6 to 10 minutes, saving approximately 70 percent in setup time compared to traditional bags.
