Huntsman Advanced Materials (The Woodlands, Texas) has introduced ARALDITE FST 40004/40005, a new resin system for resin transfer molding (RTM), infusion or pultrusion, designed for use in composites applications in the rail end market. Huntsman says that, using this system, small and medium parts can be made quickly, large parts can be produced cost effectively at low temperature injection, and a very low exotherm enables the accurate production of thick parts without limitation of part complexity and function integration. Without the use of fillers, ARALDITE FST 40004/40005 reportedly achieved the HL1/HL2 hazard level of fire safety testing under the pan-European EN 45545-2 testing program. ARALDITE FST 40004/40005 offers an RTM cure time of about 5 minutes at 15 ̊C, and a pultrusion speed of about 12 m/hr. This system also is said to exhibit a high modulus, which enables ease of installation through the production of rigid parts that can also withstand the physical stresses and strains experienced in a vehicle application.
