Eastman Machine Co. (Buffalo, N.Y.) has developed the Woodpecker model WPP pneumatic reciprocating cutter, designed to cut patterns that don't permit a lead-in cut. The blade plunges directly down into the material to start cutting. The cutter weighs less than 1.2 kg/2.6 lb, has an adjustable height of up to 5 mm/0.20 inch and its variable frequency, pneumatic cylinder-driven cutting head can operate at speeds of 1,000 to 55,000 strokes per minute.
