Hexcel (Dublin, Calif.) has introduced Modipur 5-3-0, a two-component polyurethane foam system that allows the manufacture of skis and snowboards that weigh less than 3 kg/6.61 lb in less than 5 minutes. The company’s Modipur range includes rigid, semiflexible and integral foams with closed or open cell structures. The products are used as core materials, as insulation and/or for their adhesive properties in sports and industrial applications. The foams have been used with carbon composites and wood to produce baseball bats. The company also has debuted Polyspeed Nano-Ski Laminates, which contain nanoparticles designed to improve the flexural properties of skis. The nanoparticles reportedly provide a measurable effect on the flex/damping behavior of the ski laminate.
