Amber Composites (Langley Mill, U.K.) has announced the availability of a new tooling prepreg called HX90N, a low-temperature curing epoxy resin system. It uses specially designed nano-modified epoxy resins to provide benefits that Amber says previously were unattainable. The company says HX90N improves the surface flatness and finish of tools made from various pattern materials including aluminum or epoxy tooling board. By providing molds with a flatter and pin-free surface finish, HX90N reportedly can reduce preparation time necessary to achieve Class A surfaces as well as reduce the amount of primer needed, which decreases the weight of the finished product. Tool life is also extended due to less surface pitting. The material also is said to offer good drapeability, allowing complex shapes to be easily formed.
