Henkel (Rocky Hill, Conn.), a manufacturer of adhesives, sealants and functional coatings, is exhibiting a range of composite solutions at JEC Europe, covering applications from automotive and aerospace to wind power and machine construction. First is Loctite EA 9845 LC Aero, an epoxy-based aerospace-grade surface film that offers weight savings of up to 30 percent over current surface films and a minimized pre-paint preparation. Due to its high proportion of copper particles, EA Loctite 9845 LC Aero is also said to provide good protection against lightning strikes.
Also on the Henkel stand will be the company's portfolio of benzoxazine resins, also marketed under the Loctite brand, for injection processes such as vacuum resin transfer molding (VARTM). These products can be stored and transported at room temperature, thus significantly reducing energy consumption. They also offer weight savings of up to 30 percent compared to the conventional metal structures they replace. In production, the lower shrinkage on cure offers further advantages, substantially reducing the stress to which the components are subjected and therefore improving the durability of the finished component.
Working with machinery manufacturer KraussMaffei (Munich, Germany), Henkel has developed a process for the manufacture of glass- or carbon fiber-reinforced components using the high-pressure RTM (HP-RTM) process and Henkel's Loctite MAX 3 polyurethane resin matrix. This reportedly generates a surface of sufficiently high quality to meet vehicle body requirements. At JEC Europe, Henkel exhibit the Roding Roadster R1, of which the light and strong roof module has been manufactured via HP-RTM using this material.
Henkel is also introducing a new adhesive technology for the manufacture of wind turbine blades. The polyurethane adhesives, marketed under the Loctite brand, are said to substantially reduce manufacturing time via fast-cure and no need for external heating.
