Polystrand Inc. (Montrose, Colo.) has developed Tri-PlyT, a reinforcement tape for applications that require a higher strength-to-weight ratio. The continuous 635-mm/25-inch wide tape provides 70 percent high-performance glass fibers by weight in a polypropylene thermoplastic matrix. The fibers are arranged in three layers with a 0°/90°/0° orientation to provide a balanced reinforcement that will lay flat during processing, says the company. The product reportedly weighs 29.4 oz/yd², a 20 percent reduction in weight compared to a three-layer reinforcement made with standard tapes.
