AGY has
introduced S-1 Glass, high-performance glass rovings for use in
long fiber-reinforced thermoplastics (LFT).
AGY (Aiken, S.C.) unveiled a new application for its S-1 Glass, high-performance glass rovings for use in long fiber-reinforced thermoplastics (LFT), with such resins as polycarbonate (PC), polyetherimide (PEI), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and nylon (PA 6.6). Designed for industrial applications, these glass fibers reportedly achieve desired levels of mechanical properties in reinforced thermoplastics with much lower glass fiber volume fractions. According to AGY, studies have shown that 32 percent of S-1 Glass fiber content in an LFT can deliver the same performance as an LFT with 60 percent E-glass content. Compared to E-glass, the S-1 Glass is said to have higher hydrolytic stability, a 30 percent improvement in tensile properties and an 18 percent improvement in tensile modulus. It’s available as a roving or in chopped form.
