Henkel Corp. (Rocky Hill, Conn.) has launched an epoxy-based surfacing film that offers honeycomb-cored composites enhanced protection against lightning strikes. Loctite EA 9845 LC Aero is based on Loctite EA 9845 SF Aero, a modified epoxy film adhesive. Designed for composites that contain a lightweight conductive foil, the low-areal-weight film also was developed to minimize core crush and reduce core print-through, reduce film weight by 30 percent compared to current surfacing films, and minimize prepaint prepar tion. In addition, increased UV resistance eliminates the need for pre-paint sanding and rework. Further, chemical resistance to paint stripper reduces the time required for masking. This, in turn, lowers finishing costs. The film’s cure temperature range is 120°C to 176°C (248°F to 350°F).
